Clean and professional! Having everyone set up their page in the same way allows professors to focus on the content. It shows us that the student has taken the time to format the page correctly, which creates a good first impression.
Start in the upper left corner of the page where your cursor will be automatically when you open Word. Add this information:
Your name
Instructor's name
Course name
Due date
All this information will be double-spaced. In fact, your whole document will be double spaced. Then, take a moment to think about your essay title. Ideally, it will sum up the main idea of your essay and give your readers a helpful clue about what you plan to discuss. Spend about 2 minutes thinking about your title, and if you can't think of anything catchy and brilliant, just plug something in and move on.
The title will be centered underneath the above information.
Now, go back and add the header. Double click in the upper right corner of the page above where you would normally type. This will open the header so you can type in there. You'll want to add your last name and insert the page number.
Last name 1
That's it! Now your page is set up in you are ready to go! In the line immediately following the title, go back to left justification, press tab to indent the first line of the paragraph, and start writing. In MLA format, we do not have a separate title page.
It will end up looking like this:
